For many children, a trip to the hospital can feel overwhelming. Large medical equipment, unfamiliar surroundings, and the anticipation of medical procedures can create anxiety long before treatment begins. At Hexagon Signs & Wraps, we’ve had the privilege of partnering with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) to help transform clinical spaces into immersive environments designed to comfort, distract, and inspire young patients.
For years, our team has designed, produced, and installed custom environmental graphics across multiple CHOA facilities throughout the Atlanta area. Through these projects, we’ve helped transform a wide variety of pediatric imaging, treatment, and patient care spaces into engaging environments that encourage imagination and help children feel more at ease. Each installation is designed with a simple goal in mind: creating a more welcoming experience during what can often be a stressful time for young patients and their families.
CT scan rooms have been transformed with engaging themed graphics that extend beyond the walls and onto the scanners themselves, helping intimidating medical equipment feel more approachable. Sedation rooms feature calming nighttime scenes filled with glowing fireflies, woodland creatures, white tigers, and peaceful forest environments designed to encourage relaxation before procedures.
Throughout various imaging and treatment spaces, children may find themselves exploring outer space, embarking on a magical adventure, visiting a colorful Candyland-inspired world, diving beneath the ocean, venturing into the jungle, stepping into fantasy-inspired environments, or relaxing on a peaceful beach. Each space is carefully designed to spark imagination and provide a positive distraction during their visit.
The impact of these spaces extends far beyond decoration. Research has shown that thoughtfully designed pediatric healthcare environments can help reduce anxiety, provide positive distraction, and improve the overall patient experience. For children facing medical procedures, immersive surroundings can help shift attention away from fear and toward curiosity, imagination, and comfort.
This work is especially meaningful to our team because of our close connection to CHOA. Hexagon Signs & Wraps co-owner Bethany Van Winkle operates CT scanners at CHOA Scottish Rite and sees firsthand how children react when entering imaging rooms. Her experience working directly with pediatric patients provides valuable insight into how thoughtfully designed environments can help create a more welcoming and reassuring experience for young patients and their families.
Every mural, wall wrap, and themed room is designed with a purpose beyond aesthetics. Whether a child is exploring outer space, embarking on a magical adventure, spotting animals in a nighttime forest, or relaxing on a virtual beach, these environments help transform medical spaces into places where imagination can take over, even if only for a moment.
We are proud to continue partnering with Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as they invest in creating more welcoming pediatric environments throughout their facilities. Every completed room—and every new project ahead—represents an opportunity to make pediatric healthcare a little less frightening and a lot more welcoming for the children and families they serve.
